Covering Your Cushions:The fabric that you choose for the upholstery slipcover and casings for your cushions will be the major style decision that you make. It will also be a major factor in deciding how long your new investment will last. Among the durable, natural fabrics that you can choose are cotton, wool, linen and leather. Among the synthetics, olefin is one of the most versatile fibers available. You can find olefin upholstery fabrics in weaves that mimic nearly any woven fabric - that are wash and wear easy when it comes to care. Take the extra trouble to make sure that your slipcovers and the covers for your cushions are removable so that they can be easily dry-cleaned or machine washed.
One of the first things to consider while buying a sofa is the size of the sofa. If, your apartment is on higher floors in the building, you will have to consider the size of the elevator or stairwell in the building. Nothing can be worse than buying a sofa and then realizing that it cannot reach your tenth floor apartment. You have to think of the size of the room in which you are planning to keep the sofa set.
Finally, a leather sofa is pretty easy to care for. A basic wipe down with warm water is usually enough to clean up any mishaps, and if it needs a general reconditioning, leather conditioner is readily available and is easy to apply.
The difference between professional and DIY cleaning results is generally in the chemicals used. Cleaning companies will have a range of chemicals used for specific stains: one for coffee, one for red wine, one for doggy mess, etc. If your best efforts have failed, with professional upholstery cleaning the proof is in the pudding, or lack of it on your sofas, as the case may be.
The first thing about a leather sofa that sets it above and apart from other types of sofas is its inherent durability. Leather itself is just plain tough. Whether it's cow hide, alligator, shark, or some other exotic hide, the resulting leather is simply going to last for years and years. It takes a real beating and just gets more charming as a result. The natural texture and coloration of leather lends itself to longevity because it doesn't show normal use as a defect. Rather, any occasional sign of wear just adds to the charm. This is a generalized statement and, of course, there are exceptions. Some leather is very smooth and will show blemishes. A leather sofa isn't immune to wear and tear, but it does excel what other fabric options will do.
